John and I get together at the beginning of this week to make up for last week’s holiday skipage. While there’s not a lot of news items & announcements, we manage to pull out a nice 90 minutes of several topics (out of order):

John is putting together Cloud Camp Atlanta, Jan 20th, 2008.

Sun is supporting Alice, an educational programming environment that John digs.

On the topic of Sun, we do the favorite parlor game of playing “what will happen to Sun.” See Stephen O’Grady’s excellent write-up on that topic, as mentioned, as well.

The Groundwork Opensource/HP pricing dust-up. We spend a long time analyzing both sides, and generalize on the theory that it’s always best to argue against numbers with words.

Online gambling, possible data-analysis in the cloud, and how that all relates to the cyberpunk, data-haven thriller Islands in the Net.

A brief comment on my Data Center Automation and Cloud call with CA this morning.

The forming of a new power-center in the IT department: The Hyper-Visor Police. Just like the feudal kingdom of the DBA, it’s clear that there’ll be the group that controls virtualization and uses that control for much power in the department. I for one welcome out new IT overlords.

How virtualization is making operating systems less of a constraint and more of a piece of middle-ware, or, The Big Blog Theory of Virtualization.

We talk about Doug McClure’s recent podcast series (check one here or just subscribe to his feed), which gets us into an extended discussion of what a “transaction” is vs. a “services” and how that all relates to top-down vs. bottom-up approaches to IT management.

Finally, I mention that Zbigniew Brzezinski’s Second Choice is a good, non-IT book for understanding what “thinking strategically” means using the example of American foreign policy.

Also, check out the sweet potato casserole recipe John mentioned, and, as I mentioned, Royer’s out in Round Top, Texas - damn good food and pies.

Disclosure: see the RedMonk client list for clients mentioned above and in the podcast.

Back at the Telelogic Innovation user conference this year, I had the chance to sit down with IBM’s Scott Hebner and walk through a review of what Rational has been up to over the past year.

Being at the Telelogic conference, we cover the merging in and addition of the “systems” focused portfolio that Telelogic brings to Rational.

Also, in 2008 Rational commercialized the Jazz platform first as Rational Team Concert and then, as Scott gets into, started moving it out as a platform (or hub, if you will) for the Rational portfolio. Check out my interview with Scott back at RSDC 2008 for more on that topic.

Finally, we talk about the upcoming year for Rational, getting into the 2009 road-map.

Disclosure: IBM is a client and sponsored this video.

Alchemy is primarily intended to be used with C/C++ libraries that have few operating system dependencies. Ideally suited for computation-intensive use cases, such as audio/video transcoding, data manipulation, XML parsing, cryptographic functions or physics simulation, performance can be considerably faster than ActionScript 3.0 and anywhere from 2-10x slower than native C/C++ code. Alchemy is not intended for general development of SWF applications using C/C++."

&&

Late on a Friday after a week of somewhat thin IT Management news, John and I still manage to pull out some interesting topics:

John’s experience with change management in the enterprise. Though we don’t mention it, check out Niel Nickolaisen’s piece on ITIL vs. MOF.

CA’s announcements about Amazon, SaaS offerings, and general cloudage.

Amazon and CapGemini. John mentions moving SharePoint to the cloud, which also brings up the Microsoft Online Services Suite news.

We talk about Rivermuse at length, me having spent some time looking at it more this week. John seems more informed and articulate on the topic than I do.

I cover the cloud/SaaS related news from Adobe MAX, the conference I was at earlier this week. Also see the Adobe SaaS round-up from last year that I mention.

My time at the IBM Software Analyst Summit this week: it was less about products and more about how IBM goes about doing the business side of things. Namely, the agenda was about IBM’s Industry Solution Frameworks, that map various types of businesses to the software that can help them, and the way that software is put together and used. That said, there’s some Tivoli stuff mixed in when it comes to entering new markets via Maximo and Micromuse.

The Microsoft System Center Operations Manager Cross Platform management pack for Suse Linux, which I incorrectly say is GA’ed: instead it’s slated for release in early 2009.

Also, I forgot to mention an endorsement for John’s Cloud Droplets podcast be sure to check those out. I’ve been behind on my Debriefing podcast, and it looks like John has picked up the slack in a fantastic way.

Disclosure: IBM, Microsoft, Hyperic, and Zenoss are clients. See the RedMonk client list for other clients mentioned.

Today’s Adobe MAX was all about the Platform division. This is the group that does RIAs: Flash, Flex, AIR, etc. Indeed, it seems that Macromedia has really done a reverse-acquisition when it comes to Adobe’s agenda. We all know that PDF and Creative Suite are cash-cows for Adobe, but the vision and agenda is all Flash, all the time.

As it should be, really. To be blunt: there’s not that much more to say when it comes to PDF and Creative Suite. Adobe has those two locked up. To sand down the hyperbole, there actually is a lot to say about the more general topic of documents, namely things like Acrobat.com and the BPM world of LiveCycle. And there’s plenty of excitement in Creative Suite land (XMP is an especially dorky thing that lays the lattice for niftiness, e.g., transcripts and Overlay.tv-like functionality native in video).

But, yeah: Adobe’s spending it’s resources on the Flash Platform when it comes to where it wants to drive attention. It’s setup to be the growth unit, the green-field, the new and future cash.

Today’s announcements are nothing mind-blowing like the initial announcement of “Apollo.” There’s Flash 10 shipping on Linux concurrent to other platforms (huzzah!), and though the newly announced AIR 1.5 is lagging on the Linux front, the feel is that this won’t happen much longer.

Of these newly dubbed “Flash Platform” announcements, there’s not much to say beyond the usual point-release things of adding in more features and whiz-bang. To throw up a large-disclaimer, I come at this from the developer perspective: there was much oohing and ahhhing at the nifty video, audio, and visual effects in Flash 10.

There were actually so many features and projects announced that it became a bit hard to file it all away after awhile at the keynote. I’d rather people back a blur in than have nothing to talk about, for sure. As an example, Adobe Wave looks like an import, conceptually, of the Growl notification system into Adobe Platform-land. Of Growl and AIR, see here.

And, like, holy crap: there’s the whole mobile world too. The mobile space is difficult for American tech-companies to talk bout in the States. Aside from Blackberry and the iPhone, us dumb chickens here in the US have no idea how much it’s used - our market is locked up tighter than the AppStore. We’re told - by Sun, Microsoft, Adobe…anyone that has skin in the mobile game - that the rest of the world is booming, if only we knew.

PaaSing the Cloud

Sneaking in under the camel-case-crazy name CoCoMo (and in beta), Adobe is further sinking into the cloud/services world by offering to run CoCoMo based applications in the cloud. Though I must admit I’m a bit unsure about how widely used the CoCoMo platform will be, it’s important for Adobe to be getting out there into the PaaS world and figuring things out beyond Acrobat.com and it’s other cloud-ish offerings. Adobe is still being timid when it comes to “cloud computing.” That said, as I said last year, this isn’t really too bad:

At the moment [and still now], the most interesting take-away (for existing vendors looking to go SaaS, at least) is to narrow down your SaaS efforts to the feature level instead of worrying about everything but the kitchen sink. As seen repeated in kuler, Device Central, and others, the basic pattern is creating and gardening a knowledge base community, and then pulling that knowledge into Adobe tools, such as in context sensitive panels. Taking this SaaS-as-feature approach, again, to me means eating some SaaS humble pie and asking how your software can work along side and with other software and services rather than being The Master Platform for everything.

When it comes to cloud computing, the sense I get is that Adobe would rather partner for the bigger picture of cloud computing rather than spin up their own stuff. SalesForce is obviously a friendly for them. In my mind, there’s a question of how - if - they could work with IBM: there’s a big, cloudy sky to slap a UI (read: RIAs) on-top of.

Saving the Enterprise

One last thing for you, dear readers, was a sentiment largely laid out by the SalesForce guest, Steve Fisher, at this morning’s keynote:

For the last 20 years, enterprise software has been where innovation goes to die.

Try the chicken!

More seriously, as John and I discussed last week, the enterprise world has been sucking wind when it comes to innovating over the past 5 years. The interesting innovation has happened in the web world, nary I say it, the Web 2.0 world.

As I was discussing with someone this afternoon, there are essentially 3 money-trains in software:

Ads and other indirect revenue

Selling the actual software itself (remember that one?)

The Enterprise

I’m forever harping on my RIA friends to start paying attention to helping out the last one, and they’re slow to come ’round to it. There’s largely a question of it being worth pursing or not, or if you’d just give it up to IBM, SAP, Oracle, others, and the groupies thereof. I think it’s worth it, and people like SalesForce are sort-of going after it, but it in their own pull down the statues of the past way. Their zero-sum approach is getting a bit creaky, and there’s plenty of slack for the middle-ground talker.

Adobe has the superior ground here at the moment, but Microsoft/Silverlight, Sun/JavaFX, and others in the RIA world are rowing their ships up to the shore real quick-like. The big shots listed above need to start partnering up with the RIA younger brothers here. Granted, the RIA crowd needs those gate-keepers in the short-term more than the likes of IBM need them. But, if the enterprise gate-keepers wait too long, the likes of Google, ZoHo, and, yes, SalesForce will just redefine “enterprise software” to mean “just another URL on the web” despite the FUD of GRC.

The Back-end

As ever with Adobe and RIAs, I end up at exactly the same place I always do: someone in this tussle that’s yet to take place needs to solidify their back-end story. There’s a wondering hoard of enterprise developers out there in the desert - SpringSource is going after them, RIA people should be more aggressively going after them, SalesForce-ites want them, Sun would like to bring them back, and on and on. On this front, no Elder Company has burned the ships, really, which always seems like a prudent strategy, but it sure draws it out or the rest of us ;>

Disclosure: Adobe is a client and paid my T&E to Adobe MAX. As are IBM, Microsoft, Sun, and SpringSource.

&&&

Not having recorded for a couple of weeks, we had a huge crop of IT related news to go over:

John starts out talking about encountering iTricity folks in Europe (they partner with IBM for cloud computing) and his recent cloud-talk while in Europe.

We go over the VMWare tooling released by Hyperic, Zenoss, PacketTrap, and then the GroundWork releases.

In talking about VMWare, I talk about a recent briefing with recently un-stealthed Replicate.

I re-cap some interesting items from Spiceworld, Spicework’s first user conference.

John tries to pry some information about recently signed up RedMonk client Cloudera from me, but we instead talk about Hadoop in general.< ;/li>

John then re-caps a conversation he had with the openQRM gang. This gets us into a discussion of the disconnect between monitoring, management, and provisioning: you rarely find those features under the same vendor-roof.

Finally, we go over the Microsoft BizSpark offering and how it could relate to IT management startups.

And, there’s more of course - like why companies might actually benefit from being in stealth mode rather than “flailing” about in public. We also spend time talking about pulling in Web 2.0 IT management innovations (and IT in general) into the enterprise.

Disclosure: IBM, Hyperic, Zenoss, GroundWork, Spiceworks, Cloudera, and Microsoft are clients. See the RedMonk client list for other clients mentioned.

John tries to pry some information about recently signed up RedMonk client Cloudera from me, but we instead talk about Hadoop in general.

We start out talking about Microsoft’s new BizSpark offering. Essentially, if you qualify as a startup you get a load of software for development and running on the Microsoft stack in product (if you’re doing a SaaS application) for $100 after three years. As we comment, this is pretty big offering compared to the normals costs for even an MSDN subscription, not to mention the production licenses.

We talk about Adobe MAX, coming up next week. Among other things, Ryan will be on an open source panel, while I’ll be looking forward to seeing the MAX awards announced, of which I was judge.

Finally, we wrap up by talking about Google’s release this week of audio and video in GMail. This being RIA weekly, we try to wedge this new functionality into an the RIA landscape and take time to talk about Google’s possible RIA platform ambitions, if only providing implementations for some of the richer tags coming up in HTML 5.

The talk will go over the idea of using a leaned-up approach to SOA to help build the type of enterprise architecture needed to get through tight spending times. The idea here is that controls, governance, and the reporting capabilities that those two enable can help IT departments survive in tight spending times as we have now.

Put another way, here’s the longer synopsis:

With the arrival of an economic downturn, and with the looming prospect of tight budgets in 2009, IT managers are all taking a hard look at their project portfolios to separate the “need-to-have” from the “nice-to-have.” How does your SOA plan fit into all of this? Does it make sense to pursue SOA in this environment? Join RedMonk Industry Analyst Michael Cote and open source software provider, MuleSource for a 60-minute webinar. In this webinar, Michael Cote will build a case for why leveraging the benefits of SOA is all the more crucial in a tight budget environment. During this time, Michael will also explain how to leverage techniques such as open source software, pragmatic architectural choices, and proper governance techniques to maximize ROI and minimize risk.

Several times a year, a long-time Windows user I know switches over to a Mac. What with the new MBP’s (”MacBookPro”) out, there’re several people “making the leap,” as they always put it. These people are usually “business users,” people using their machine for work: information users, programmers, managers, etc.

My usage tends to follow along these lines. Thus, the things I care about on Macs tend to be slightly less consumer focused and more focused on things like email, calendaring, and massaging all the information that flows through the your daily work-life.

I’ve been on a Mac for several years, though not as long as most people assume when they see I’m the only stuffed shirt in the room with a Mac. In my world, Dells and ThinkPads rule.

These two things together means I end up recommending an initial manifest of install and usage for Macs. Here’s a short summary of what I usually tell people, broken up into applications, usage, & understanding.

Save It

As a disclaimer note, I don’t actually think Macs are better than Windows and this list isn’t intended to prove that. I yell at my Mac at least once a day (and my iPhone even more as the crud up of applications has made it crash about every 10 minutes) and I can assure you that it’s a PoS in it’s own way.

Hey, it’s a computer, what do you expect?

If you prefer and/or want try using Macs, these lists will hopefully make you yell less at the damn machine, and I hear Vists and Ubuntu are pretty slick now-a-days if you still find yourself hating OS X and longing for a track-stick ;>

Applications

Much more so than when I used Windows, I use tons of third party applicati
